The Font Bureau, one of the countrys top typographic design firms that creates fonts used by prominent companies
including Apple and Microsoft, is suing the American TV network NBC for no less than 2 million in damages. The Font Bureau claims that the typefaces used in their recent fall marketing campaign, promoting shows such as The Jay Leno Show and Saturday Night Live are the property of The Font Bureau and NBC used them without the appropriate authority to.
The Font Bureau has filed a trademark and copyright infringement lawsuit against NBC in U.S. District Court, stating that NBC only paid for a single license, which only permits them to install the fonts on one computer only (but they went ahead and installed it on several company machines), and only paid for a limited number of fonts.
The Font Bureau claims that NBCs use of the fonts have "caused injury to Font Bureau’s relationships with present and prospective customers," will make it more difficult for Font Bureau to enter into licensing deals with other companies, and "will cause confusion, mistake and deception as to the source of Font Bureau’s trademarks. NBC is yet to comment on the matter.
