![]() Recently Microsoft has been working to promote its latest incarnation of a search engine. From MSN to Live and now to 'Bing', the search engine's attempt to rise to the number one position has worried those in the Google camp, especially after its old rival Yahoo recently announced that it would be handing its search engine business to Microsoft in exchange for Microsoft's advertising business. With its crown under threat, Google has been working on the very thing which pushed it forwards into our day to day lives in the first place - search. The interesting thing is, Google's secret project hasn't been about a minor overhaul of the engine itself - despite its familiar appearance, the behind the beta is a whole new Google. Whilst Google's latest incarnation of search may still be under construction, the development team have decided that the overhaul is fit for public use, and whilst you may not notice many of the changes under the hood, I can confirm that this is indeed a new breed of Google. Google themselves specified their aims for the project, including their desire to increase indexing speed and accuracy, as explained in the following statement: “For the last several months, a large team of Googlers has been working on a secret project: a next-generation architecture for Google’s web search. It’s the first step in a process that will let us push the envelope on size, indexing speed, accuracy, comprehensiveness and other dimensions. The new infrastructure sits “under the hood” of Google’s search engine, which means that most users won’t notice a difference in search results. But web developers and power searchers might notice a few differences, so we’re opening up a web developer preview to collect feedback.” From what I can see, accuracy has certainly improved and the search engine seems to be churning out results far faster - something which Google's competitors will hate to hear... Why not give the upcoming incarnation of Google Search a try? Click here to be taken there. Source: Mashable |
